ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION

air pollution

Pollution is the introduction of a contaminant in one half, ie the introduction of any substance or form of energy with the potential to cause irreversible or not, the environmental pollution inicial.Se called to the presence in the environment any agent (physical, chemical or biological) or a combination of various places, such as forms and concentrations are or may be harmful to health, safety or welfare of the population, or which may be harmful for plant or animal life or prevent the normal use of property and places of recreation and enjoyment of them.

Environmental pollution is also the incorporation into the receiving bodies of solid, liquid or gaseous, or mixtures thereof, provided that adversely alter the natural conditions of the same, or which may affect the health, hygiene or welfare of the public.

Types of pollution
  • Atmospheric Pollution
Air pollution refers to the alteration of Earth's atmosphere by the addition of gases or solid or liquid particles suspended in various proportions to the natural.
The name of air pollution is usually applied to changes that have harmful effects on health of living beings and the material elements, and not to other alterations as harmless. The main mechanisms of air pollution are industrial processes involving combustion in industries such as automobiles and residential heating, generating carbon monoxide and dioxide, nitrogen oxides and sulfur, among other pollutants. Similarly, some industries emit harmful gases in their production processes, such as chlorine or inquemados hydrocarbons.Air pollution may be local, where the effects associated with the outbreak were found in the vicinity of the planet or, when the characteristics of the pollutant, affected the overall balance of the planet and remote areas to contain the outbreaks issuers
  • Soil contamination Soil contamination is caused by deposition of chemicals and waste. The former can be of industrial or domestic, whether in the form of liquid waste such as sewage from the houses, or by air pollution due to the material it contains then falls on the ground.
  • Water contamination should be noted that water is contaminated, if its composition or state are altered so that they no longer meet the conditions for optimal use in their natural state.
According to the definition given by WHO for the pollution should also be considered, both modifications of the physical, chemical and biological water, which can make it lose its drinking water for daily consumption or use for domestic, industrial agricultural, etc., as well as the temperature changes caused by emissions of hot water (thermal pollution).

Contaminants

Gaseous pollutants in indoor and outdoor environments vapors and gaseous pollutants appear in different concentrations. The most common gaseous pollutants are carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides and ozone. Different sources produce these chemicals but the major artificial source is the burning of fossil fuel. Indoor air pollution is caused by the consumption of snuff, the use of certain building materials, cleaning products and household furniture. Gaseous air pollutants come from volcanoes, fires and industry. The most commonly recognized type of air pollution is smog (smog). The smog generally refers to a condition caused by the action of sunlight on car exhaust and factories.

The greenhouse effect that prevents a part of the heat received from the sun and let the air back into space. This heats the earth's surface in what is known as the greenhouse effect. There is a certain amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere that are absolutely necessary to heat the Earth, but in due proportion. Activities such as burning carbon based fuels and increase the proportion of the greenhouse effect increases. Many scientists believe that because there is global warming. Other gases that contribute to the problem include chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), methane, nitrous oxides and ozone.

Acid rain is formed when moisture in the air combines with nitrogen oxide or sulfur dioxide emitted by factories, power plants and vehicles that burn coal or oil. This chemical combination of gases to form water vapor and sulfuric acid, nitric acid, substances that fall into the ground as precipitation or acid rain. Contaminants that can form acid rain can travel long distances, and the winds shift thousands of kilometers before rushing to the dew, mist or rain, hail, snow or fog normal place, which becomes acid when combined with the waste gases.

The damage to the ozone layer is produced mainly by the use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Ozone is a form of oxygen that is in the upper atmosphere of the earth. The layer of ozone molecules in the atmosphere absorbs some of the ultraviolet (UV) radiation before it reaches the earth's surface, which makes life possible on earth. Ozone depletion produces higher levels of UV radiation on earth, thus endangering both plants and animals.

Atmospheric dust (or particulate matter) is the term used to designate a combination of solid particles and liquid droplets that are in the air. Some particles are large and dark enough to be seen as soot or smoke. Others are so small they can only be detected with an electron microscope. When you breathe the dust, it can irritate and damage the lungs which would produce respiratory problems. Fine particles are easily inhaled deeply into the lungs where they can be absorbed into the bloodstream or remain embedded for long periods of time.

Climate: generally pollutants rise or float away from their sources without build up to dangerous levels. The patterns of winds, clouds, rain and temperature can affect the speed with which pollutants are removed from an area. Weather patterns that trap air pollution in the valleys or on the earth can move, damage clean environment away from the original sources. Air pollution is caused by any unwanted substance that reaches the atmosphere. Is a major problem in modern society. While air pollution is a problem usually worse in the cities, the pollutants affecting the air everywhere. These substances include various gases and tiny particles or particulate matter that may be harmful to human health and the environment. Pollution can be in the form of gases, liquids or solids. Many pollutants are released into the air as a result of human behavior. Contamination exists at different levels: personal, national and global levels.
